  1. Interesting. Never thought of GTA as a place for original music. There are scores in the newer games, but I’ve never considered the older games. Can’t wait to listen.

  2. “NYPD… LAPD… SFPD… don’t fuck with me.” I thought I was such a badass walking to school listening to that (via the game disc in my discman)

    Great ep!

  3. Been a fan since GTA 1, top down on my brother’s laptop. GTA IV introduced me to so many good bands, have the soundtrack and it’s awesome.

  4. Fuck. Yes! This was a great episode!

  5. This one somehow slipped under my radar a few days after. Very enlightening experience, because I never gave the music in GTA1, London & 2 much thought (probably because I thought it was all licensed like in the later titles).

It’s really awesome and meta how Rockstar made music specifically for the radio stations in these games to craft a unique world that’s nevertheless based on reality. It’s something I’d love to see more of in far more fictional universes in games, as well (I’m thinking

I played GTA1 tons on my Windows 95 computer as a kid, but I never gave the music much thought because I’d end up just putting my Eiffel 65 CD in to listen to, which the game would play a random track from whenever I entered a car (I believe the PSX version allowed you to do this as well). Nothing quite like getting chased by cops while listening to “Silicon Girl.” *shudder*

Stikki Fingers’ “4 Letter Love” sounds like a happier version of Alice in Chains in some ways.

GTA3 could have fooled me with its music. I thought all of it was licensed (like the Scarface tracks, for instance), so like you guys said, the tunes perfectly replicate the time of the game’s release, to the point that if it were on an actual radio station we wouldn’t pay much mind to it.

I need to give Chinatown Wars another shot, ’cause I remember being legitimately impressed by it. I surmise that the PSP version is the superior of the two?

And this is just a response to Henry regarding Miyamoto speaking in English on the VGAs: I’m pretty sure he was required to by Spike TV, because they didn’t want to utilize a translator and/or subtitle his speech. Probably some kind of dumb rule on the TV network’s part. They did the same thing with Hideo Kojima, which is crappy because Kojima was legitimately nervous about his English when he was on camera.

  6. Did you guys know that Royce Da 5’9 has a long and storied history with Eminem? They duo on “Life in the Fast Lane” and Royce outperforms Eminem by a wide margin(I’ll let you search for the track if that’s your thing).

Anyhoo, I’m one of the few who is not a fan of GTA. Like Brett, the closer to reality a game is, the less I want to play it, and enjoying killing innocent bystanders just makes me feel dirty. Glad you asked! 🙂

I did, however, like the the music you played, and I super-love the Chinatown Wars set. The first two tracks of the set sounded like what Yuzo Koshiro might have done with Revenge of Shinobi had it been made on the Sega CD. Hey! Didn’t your guest also co-host the Shinobi episode(see how I did that?)?
