  1. Sweet! back onto pokemon games I do like! XD

I’m a bit sad that Lacunosa town from BW didn’t make it, that was probably my favorite tune from generation V. But hey, village bridge is there! 😀

Also Brett, since you might have chance to do another episode after going over the 3DS games… have you considered dedicating the last episode to the more notable spin-offs? I remember the trading card game having really sweet music, for example.

  2. I love the music from Diamond and Pearl (and really liked the games); I feel like the later games’ soundtracks have fallen short of that mark for the most part. Also, I wish later games kept the Pokémon following behind you that HeartGold and SoulSilver had.

A couple corrections: Sinnoh is based on Hokkaido, not Europe. HeartGold/SoulSilver are the same mix of 2D and 3D that Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and Black/White/Black 2/White 2 are (2D characters on 3D environments; B/W/B2/W2 just had more detailed environments and played with the camera more).

  3. Man this music was great!!!!

If you want to say what the regions are based on in the next podcast; Sinnoh is based on Hokkaido in the north of Japan, while Hoenn is the Kyushu and Okinawa region in the south.

One thing I love about that village bridge song is that there are 4 NPCs you can talk to, and they add more layers to the song.

My favorite thing about all this Pokemon battle music is that if you took 5 pokemon battle themes, then 5 from FF and Dragon quest, you could feasibly find the songs in Pokemon, but it would be much harder with the other franchises. Some people may not like that as much, but I love it.

If you are going to use BW 2 songs next, please use the gym leader theme from BW2, it is GREAT!!!

  4. Man, Pokemon music covers a lot of ground. The triumphant and upbeat route themes, the diverse and unique town themes, and the various pulse-pounding battle themes. I bought a DS way late in its life cycle, to play Black and White. It was my reintroduction to the world of pokemon, which I had been absent from since Red and Blue. It’s really jarring to jump from 8-bit pokemon music to the sound output of the DS. Can’t wait for the next episode. Long live Rocktober!

  5. How come there was no reaction from Brett or Chris when Henry said, “I saw Carolyn’s goodies?”

  6. @Henry

Sinnoh is based on Hokkaido! The northern region of Japan where it gets very mountainous and you can go up into the snow.

  7. Man, that Diamond/Pearl Trainer Battle music really takes me back, even though I’ve probably only put about 40 minutes into Diamond/Pearl. Probably my favorite Pokemon battle tune outside of Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal. Love the trumpet trade-off *ba-pa-da (ba-pa-da!) BA-PA-DA!*, followed by the synth lead. All backed by a disco beat. That goes into timpani drums (not so much a taiko drum, although I can see the similarities, Henry!)

My favorite use of timpani in game music aside from D/P’s Trainer Battle theme lies in Breath of Fire and the Level 1 “Lakeside” music from Sparkster (SNES).

I recognized some of the other tracks ’cause they were used in the Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions concert. HG/SS’ version of Battle vs. Champion is particularly epic. And funny enough, Jake Kaufman arranged the Pokemon Center music for the symphony. Good stuff.

Looking forward to the X & Y stuff, I’m thrilled with what I’ve heard from it, particularly that Gym Leader battle theme.

If anyone’s interested in learning more about the orchestral Pokemon concert, I wrote up a review here: http://www.vgmonline.net/pokemonreport/

  8. The Sinnoh games easily have my favorite music in the series. Cynthia’s battle theme is just the fucking best. That’s a song that immediately tells you that shit has gotten real and that you are going to get your ass kicked. The fast pace of the song and its ominous tone really got my blood pumping, and its probably at least half the reason Cynthia is easily my favorite champion of all time.

  9. Sad not to see B&W2 music, Colress and Hugh battle themes are my favorite music from all ds pokemon

    • You should be able to hear music from BW2 in the next episode. This episode was huge and long as it was, so Brett decided to couple BW2 with X&Y.

  10. The end with the old man leader annoyed me with stupid twist, he turned into a cartoon villain the moment he pretty much said it was all a ruse so that he gets all the Pokemon (mwahahaha! twirls evil tash).

  11. First time commenting, just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work!

Also Brett is right, Lugia is the greatest. Granted my only experience with pokemon is Silver on the gameboy.

  12. I skipped Diamond and Pearl so it was cool hearing some of the tracks I missed.

  13. Some remixes of the two soul silver/heart gold songs in the episode that I thought you guys might get a kick out of:

    Battle vs Ho Oh: http://youtu.be/ACeRZSfSJ8M
    Battle vs Champion: http://youtu.be/wSKxTqDvsas

  14. Brett,
I’m writing this having just heard the final episode in this Rocktober series, but I had to comment that since I’m Pokemon Ignorant, every time I heard you guys say “Diamond and Pearl” I could only think of the 90’s song “Diamonds and Pearls” by Prince and the New Power Generation. I know it’s not the same thing, but there you go. 🙂

  15. Diamond was the first Pokemon game I played all the way through. I really enjoyed it, even though I never did come close to catching them all. Of course, several of these tracks I know best by their Smash Bros. incarnations, such as the Palika/Dialga fight.

Nice Rocktober! Now, next year, I hope we get the Mega Month I was expecting. 😉
